The BCCNs are a German governmental initiative in Computational Neuroscience (http://www.nncn.de) which aims to foster the tight integration of theoretical and experimental neuroscience. The BCCN Heidelberg/Mannheim is devoted to the topic ‘From Genes to Behavior’ and investigates the links between biophysical properties of neurons and synapses controlled by single genes, their impact on neural network dynamics and computation, and the implications in turn for normal and aberrant cognitive processing. For more information on participating groups see http://www.izn.uni-heidelberg.de/CNS.
A graduate school providing teaching and training in computational and experimental neuroscience methods will be established as part of the BCCN.
The Heidelberg University and the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) Mannheim provide an internationally outstanding environment for neuroscience research. Heidelberg University was ranked as Germany’s top university in 2008 by Times Higher Education, and the CIMH is one of Europe’s premier research institutions dedicated to mental health.
